Fifty-three Russian casualties per km gained during autumn offensive - ISW
The estimates drawn by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) say from September to November 2024, Russia on average lost 53 soldiers while advancing through Ukrainian territories and in Kursk region.
That’s according to the think tank’s latest report, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.
“The Kremlin is continuing to suffer significant manpower losses to make tactical advances in western Donetsk Oblast at the expense of Russia's ongoing war effort and the medium-term viability of the Russian economy,” the report says.
The UK Ministry of Defense, citing data from the Ukrainian General Staff, reported on December 5 that Russia’s average daily casualties in November 2024 reached a new historical high of 1,523. British analysts added that for the first time Russian troops suffered just over 2,000 casualties on November 28 alone.
It is estimated that Russian troops sustained 45,690 casualties in total in November 2024. The British Ministry of Defense noted that November 2024 was the fifth consecutive month when Russia’s casualty toll was on the rise.
According to geolocation data, Russian troops advanced at a rate of approximately 27.96 square kilometers per day, having captured a total of 839 sq km in Ukraine and Kursk region in November 2024.
ISW previously reported that Russian troops suffered greater losses in September and October 2024 and that Russian casualties amounted to approximately 80,110 in exchange for approximately 1,517 square kilometers of captured land in Ukraine and Kursk region in these two months.
“Russian forces have thus suffered an estimated 125,800 casualties during a period of intensified offensive operations in September, October, and November 2024 in exchange for 2,356 square kilometers of gains. (Or approximately 53 Russian casualties per square kilometer of Ukrainian territory seized),” the report says.
As Ukrinform reported, referring to the General Staff, Russia’s casualty toll since the large-scale invasion has been estimated at 750,610, including 1,660 killed or wounded in action over the past 24 hours.
