Türkiye Warns of Military Action if PKK/YPG Fails to Withdraw from Syria
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has issued a stern ultimatum to the PKK/YPG, warning that failure to withdraw from Syria will result in military action. Speaking on CNN Turk, Fidan stated that Türkiye's message, conveyed via the US and media, demands the immediate departure of foreign terrorist fighters from Türkiye, Iran, and Iraq, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
The PKK, recognized as a terrorist group by Türkiye, the US, and the EU, has been linked to over 40,000 deaths in its decades-long campaign. Its Syrian branch, the YPG, has sought to establish a "terror corridor" near the Turkish border. Türkiye has actively countered these efforts through military operations.
Fidan also emphasized the readiness of Türkiye and the new Syrian administration to take custody of ISIS prisoners currently held by the PKK/YPG. He criticized the justification of support for the terror group under the pretext of guarding these detainees.
Support for Syria’s New Administration
The recent shift in Syria’s leadership, with Ahmed al-Sharaa assuming power after the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime, was highlighted by Fidan. He urged international backing for the new administration, calling for a peaceful transition and integration of all groups into the system.
Türkiye, Fidan added, remains committed to Syria’s territorial integrity and opposes any policies of regional domination, stressing cooperation rooted in shared geography and cultural ties.
Fidan praised interim leader al-Sharaa for his inclusive approach, expressing hope for continued progress in stabilizing the country and unifying diverse political factions.
