Eurowings, the low-cost airline affiliated with the German Lufthansa Group, has launched scheduled flights between Ljubljana and Düsseldorf. Passengers will be able to fly between the cities three times a week as well as benefit from Eurowings' connecting flights.

Ljubljana airport welcomed the arrival of the first Eurowings flight from Düsseldorf with a ceremony which heard that the new route was made possible by Slovenian airport fee subsidies, CE Report quotes The Slovenia Times.

Until the end of October, Eurowings will fly its Airbus A319 and A320 between Ljubljana and Düsseldorf on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The flight to Düsseldorf takes about one hour and 40 minutes.

"This is an important addition to our network, also thanks to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Slovenia's state incentives as part of the public call for improved air connectivity," said Babett Stapel, managing director of airport operator Fraport Slovenia.

"We believe this new destination will attract both business and leisure travellers, who, in addition to visiting the vibrant German city, will also have the opportunity to continue their journey to numerous appealing destinations within the extensive Eurowings network," she added as quoted by Fraport Slovenia.

Reinald Frankewitz, head of airport and network relations at Eurowings, said "travellers from Slovenia in particular will benefit from the 110 destinations they can reach from Düsseldorf".

Eurowings applied to sixth call for subsidies offered by the Slovenian government to improve the country's air connectivity. In the same way routes connecting Ljubljana with Luxembourg, Riga, Copenhagen and Madrid have been established.

Tomaž Pečnik of the Infrastructure Ministry said the call was one of the most important measures to improve air connectivity. A new call was published in March.

"A total of 977,316 passengers were recorded in 2022, a figure that rose to 1.44 million last year, which is almost 50% more. In 2022, passengers could fly to 20 destinations, while this year they can fly to 26 destinations from Ljubljana Airport," Pečnik said.

Ljubljana airport expects this summer season to be record-breaking in terms of carriers. Twenty-four airlines will operate flights to 26 destinations, making available over 170 scheduled flights per week. There will also be charter flights to 52 holiday destinations.
