A passenger plane carrying 67 people from Azerbaijan to southern Russia crashed on Wednesday near the Kazakh city of Aktau, local authorities said, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that its teams found the plane engulfed in flames upon arriving at the scene.

“Rescue units began extinguishing the fire. Information about casualties is currently being clarified, and according to preliminary reports, there are survivors,” the ministry said. The plane had 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport reported in a preliminary statement.

Azerbaijan Airlines stated that flight J2-8243 — operating an Embraer 190 aircraft from Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, to Grozny in Russia’s Chechnya region — made an emergency landing approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from Aktau. “Additional information regarding the incident will be provided to the public,” the airline said on its Facebook page.
