North Macedonia passes landmark education law
Parliament of North Macedonia adopted the draft law amending the Law on Secondary Education at its 42nd session, under a shortened procedure. The law was passed through a double voting procedure, including the votes of MPs from non-majority communities.
The amendments introduce provisions that organize secondary education in terms of institutions, staff, and content to ensure it is accessible to all students, including children with disabilities, with the creation of inclusive teams and support mechanisms for students with disabilities, CE Report quotes MIA.
New provisions include the introduction of career counseling, the roles of a career counselor and a coordinator for practical education. The law also establishes a new framework for final secondary school exams and, for the first time, enables student self-organization and active participation in secondary schools.
Last Tuesday, Members of Parliament passed six education-related laws under a shortened procedure. These include the law on subsidized student meals, which increases the number of students eligible for meal support. They also approved amendments to the Law on Primary Education, the Law on Textbooks for Primary and Secondary Education, the Law on Vocational Education and Training, the Law on Educational Inspection, and the Law on the Bureau for the Development of Education.
