Meta launches AI in EU after data law delays

US tech giant Meta said that it was rolling out its AI chat function tool in Italy and in the European Union.

Meta AI will be available in the coming weeks within Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, CE Report quotes ANSA.

The chat will be in six European languages, including Italian.

The announcement came after the Irish data protection authority in June 2024 had stopped the release as Mark Zuckerberg's company wanted to use EU users' data on Facebook and Instagram to train its artificial intelligence systems.

The company said bringing its AI technology to Europe had required more time than it expected as it continues to navigate a "complex legislative system", telling ANSA that Meta AI is not trained on information taken from European users who utilize its applications.

Launched in the United States in 2023, it will be rolled out across 41 European countries, including European Union members, as well as 21 European overseas territories, the company said in a statement.
