NBA and FIBA Explore New European Basketball League
The NBA and FIBA have announced plans to explore a new men’s basketball league in Europe. The decision was made after discussions between NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis during recent meetings in New York and Mies, Switzerland, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
FIBA’s Zagklis highlighted Europe’s rich history in club competitions and elite talent but noted the untapped potential for growth in European club basketball. The new league aims to combine the NBA’s business expertise with FIBA’s international experience to attract new fans, investors, and maximize benefits for all stakeholders.
Silver outlined plans for a 16-team league, consisting of 12 permanent teams and 4 spots open for promotion or relegation each season. Teams will be a mix of existing clubs, potential EuroLeague defectors, and new franchises, based in established markets and emerging basketball hubs across Europe.
