Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 21st International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) on Tuesday, held at the Palace of Parliament, Dan expressed his pride in Bucharest hosting an event of such international scope. The competition has brought together over 300 students from 54 countries.
"I am honored that Bucharest is the venue for this educational event, which not only fosters young people's interest in science but also encourages them to solve problems and develop critical and experimental thinking," he shared on Facebook.
Mayor Dan extended his best wishes to the participants, encouraging them to pursue their passion for science. He also highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of scientists.
"While scientists rarely make newspaper headlines—unlike politicians or celebrities—our entire civilization is built on science. It is crucial to promote its value and to appreciate those who dedicate their lives to advancing scientific knowledge, as well as those who nurture future generations of scientists," he said.
The 21st International Junior Science Olympiad is taking place in Bucharest from December 2 to 12, organized by Romania's Education Ministry in partnership with the Politehnica National University of Science and Technology, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, and the Bucharest School Inspectorate.
This annual competition, which rotates among member countries, challenges students in natural sciences, including physics, biology, and chemistry, fostering interdisciplinary learning and innovation.
