Serbian President claims foreign influence behind student protests
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, stated that the ongoing student protests in the country are not genuine student demonstrations but are supported by external influences, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
During the meeting "The Future, Not the Past," part of a broader initiative for dialogue with youth, Vučić said that one of the main reasons for the protests is opposition to the adoption of the Srebrenica Resolution at the United Nations.
He remarked that "in the coming days, much evidence will be revealed proving that recent events in Serbia have significant support from foreign actors." According to him, the protests have both domestic and international objectives, accusing “global powers” of being behind them for “three reasons.”
“Because they want to finalize the issue of Kosovo as quickly as possible, cannot tolerate Serbia being a leading power in the region, and because Serbia resisted voting on the Srebrenica Resolution at the UN,” Vučić said.
He did not respond to questions about whether the Serbian government would meet the demands of students who have been protesting for weeks across the country, calling for accountability over the Novi Sad accident in which 15 people lost their lives.
