Romania Declares Mourning for Pope Francis
The Romanian government has designated April 26, 2025, a national day of mourning to honor Pope Francis, coinciding with his funeral at the Vatican, CE Report quotes Agerpres
Pope Francis was remembered as a spiritual and moral leader with a deep connection to Romania, especially during his 2019 apostolic visit. All public institutions and authorities are required to fly the Romanian flag at half-staff, including political, cultural, and educational institutions, as well as at border crossings, transport hubs, and on Romanian vessels. Citizens displaying the national flag are also urged to do the same.
Broadcast and cultural organizations will adjust their programming to reflect the solemn occasion. The decision was made in accordance with Law 75/1994, which governs national flag protocols on days of mourning.
Romania has observed similar days in the past, notably for King Mihai I, Queen Anne, and victims of national and international tragedies.
