Romania Urges EU Action on U.S. Tariffs
Romania’s Finance Minister Tanczos Barna has called for swift action in response to the U.S. tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, urging the European Commission to begin negotiations within 90 days and highlighting the need for Romania to implement protective measures for its key industries, CE Report quotes Agerpres
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Barna described the situation as “unprecedented,” following discussions at the informal ECOFIN meeting in Warsaw. "The Commission and member states have acted with unity and calm," he said, noting that the long-term effects of the trade dispute remain uncertain, though some experts foresee potential positive impacts, including on inflation.
Barna emphasized that Romania must prioritize "safety measures" for its automotive sector and other vulnerable industries. He also underlined the importance of the EU's new defense financing package, stating that Romania views it as a vital opportunity for industrial growth and job creation.
"Besides fulfilling our military commitments, we must seize this chance for economic development," the minister concluded.
