Romania's OECD Accession: A Key Development Milestone
Romania’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), alongside full integration into Schengen and completion of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), is a pivotal moment for the country's modernization, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu stated at the Cotroceni Palace on Wednesday, CE Report quotes Agerpres
Ciolacu emphasized that joining the OECD is Romania’s top strategic goal for development, promising increased investments, improved country ratings, and a fairer competitive environment for businesses. This membership is expected to lead to more efficient public administration and enhanced social services for all Romanians.
One concrete example of progress is a proposed OECD-recommended measure in education: annual online evaluations for teachers, which will directly influence their salaries, tying compensation to the performance of the education system.
Ciolacu also noted that Romania’s OECD accession, combined with PNRR completion, represents the most complex administrative challenge since European integration. However, the benefits—such as a significant boost in Romania’s GDP, access to cheaper financing, and a stronger position in global policy-making—are immense.
“This is a historic opportunity for Romania to become a European economic power,” Ciolacu concluded, underscoring the national importance of this project.
