Oltenia's UNESCO Geopark Bid Continues
British journalist and film producer Charley Ottley continues to support the "Oltenia de sub Munte" region's bid to become a UNESCO Geopark, despite opposition from some local mayors. Ottley, who serves as the region's ambassador, promotes it as a tourist destination through his documentary series "Flavours of Romania" and his participation in local tourism forums, CE Report quotes Agerpres
At the recent Oltenia Travel Forum in Baile Govora, Ottley emphasized the region's potential, describing it as "the Transylvania of the south," with rich culture, history, stunning landscapes, and high biodiversity. However, he stressed the need for local authorities to protect and promote these assets to avoid development that could harm the environment, such as plans for large-scale tourist resorts.
Ottley criticized Ranca’s current development model, urging a focus on restoring existing heritage, including manors and historic buildings, rather than building new, large structures that damage the natural landscape. He believes cultural and nature tourism is the key to the region’s prosperity.
The Kogayon Association, which advocates for the UNESCO geopark status, remains hopeful despite challenges. The association's president, Florin Stoican, confirmed that the project is progressing, with the paperwork nearly complete for resubmission. Stoican remains optimistic that local authorities will eventually support the initiative, which could significantly boost tourism and local businesses.
The Oltenia Travel Forum brings together stakeholders from across the region to discuss strategies for sustainable tourism development.
