Romanian PM Welcomes EU Proposal to Exempt Defence Spending from Deficit Rules
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Tuesday welcomed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal to exempt defence spending from the EU's excessive deficit procedure, a move Romania has long supported, CE Report quotes Agerpres
"Europe must be prepared to uphold its security and defence," Ciolacu stated, highlighting Romania's advocacy for this exemption since the start of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. He emphasized that increased defence investments would strengthen EU member states’ capabilities and enhance Europe’s security.
Von der Leyen's plan includes a new fund that could mobilize nearly EUR 800 billion for defence investments, including military aid to Ukraine. The proposal, unveiled ahead of the March 6 EU summit, also suggests giving member states greater flexibility on defence-related debt and deficit spending, as well as reallocating regional development funds for military investments.
