UDMR Leader Calls for Urgent Discussions on Romania's Foreign Policy and Security
Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Chairman Kelemen Hunor has called for urgent discussions within the ruling coalition and the Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT) on Romania’s foreign policy and security, particularly in light of the annulment of the presidential election and current geopolitical developments, CE Report quotes Agerpres
Speaking to AGERPRES, Hunor emphasized the need for Romania to adopt a pragmatic approach and establish communication channels with the Trump Administration as a matter of urgency. He pointed out that foreign policy discussions within the coalition have been lacking and stressed that Romania cannot afford to ignore these critical issues any longer.
“The interim president, Ilie Bolojan, must convene a CSAT meeting not only to address the election annulment but also to reassess Romania’s position in the international context. At the moment, Romania lacks communication channels with the Trump Administration, and this must change,” Hunor stated.
He further warned that a potential withdrawal of American forces from Europe, including Romania, would be a significant loss, making it imperative for the Eastern Flank to be reinforced with European troops. He called for an accelerated effort to build a robust European defense, noting that Europe has lost valuable time in addressing key security concerns.
Additionally, Hunor stressed the importance of strengthening relations with neighboring countries, as well as with key European partners like Poland, France, and the UK. He urged Romania to take an active role in shaping the region’s security strategy, particularly in the Black Sea area.
On the issue of the presidential election annulment, Hunor insisted that Romania must maintain a firm stance, defending the decision with clear evidence and not yielding to external criticism. “The election was voided due to proven interventions, and we must stand by this decision without apology,” he said.
Meanwhile, Crin Antonescu, the common candidate of the Social Democratic Party, National Liberal Party, and UDMR in the presidential election, echoed Hunor’s concerns. He called for an urgent CSAT meeting and a gathering of pro-European leaders in Romania, warning that revisiting past strategic partnerships would have serious implications.
With mounting geopolitical uncertainties, Romania’s leadership faces growing pressure to define its strategic direction and strengthen its alliances to safeguard national interests.
