Romanian Border Police Conduct Over 1.4 Million Checks Using eDAC System
Since Romania's partial accession to the Schengen Area with air and sea borders on March 31, 2024, the Romanian Border Police have conducted more than 1.4 million identity checks using the eDAC application at airports nationwide. These operations led to the discovery of 877 crimes and 894 misdemeanors, amounting to 1,705,050 RON in penalties, CE Report quotes Agerpres
Authorities reported that individuals identified through these checks were either handed over to the relevant structures for legal action or had their journeys interrupted. Recent cases include a 17-year-old Romanian citizen attempting to travel with a passport that did not belong to her and a man wanted by law enforcement.
Although border controls for travelers to and from Schengen states were lifted at airports and seaports, the Romanian Border Police, alongside national law enforcement agencies, continue random identity verifications and security operations. These measures aim to prevent and combat illegal activities, utilizing mobile devices linked to national and Schengen databases.
In the past month, approximately 20 Romanian minors were prevented from traveling to Schengen countries due to non-compliance with travel regulations. The Ministry of Interior confirmed that mixed control teams will maintain vigilance, conducting unannounced checks at airports, ports, and within a 30-km radius of border areas to ensure security and prevent illegal migration.
