Alexandru Ioan Cuza: A Hero of the Peasants and Architect of Modern Romania
Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the first ruler of the Romanian United Principalities, is celebrated as a hero of the peasants and a visionary leader in Romania's history, according to Ioan Aurel Pop, President of the Romanian Academy. Speaking at a conference in Targoviste, Pop highlighted Cuza's pivotal role in shaping modern Romania, CE Report quotes Agerpres
"Cuza was a hero of the people, particularly the peasants, to whom he granted land and protection. When he passed away in Heidelberg, his body was brought back to Romania, where tens of thousands of peasants gathered in Ruginoasa to mourn him, calling him their prince who loved them and gave them land," Pop remarked.
Cuza's reforms and vision laid the foundation for many achievements that followed his reign. "In just seven years, he accomplished more for the country than others did in decades. Cuza understood his mission and aligned with the will of the Romanian people, making him an exemplary statesman," Pop added.
The reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza is commemorated annually on January 24, the Day of the Unification of the Romanian Principalities of 1859. This historic act, uniting Moldavia and Wallachia under Cuza's leadership, marked the first step toward creating the modern Romanian state.
