Romania Joins U.S. Visa Waiver Program in a Historic Milestone
Romania has officially become the 43rd country to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP), marking a significant achievement in the bilateral relationship between Romania and the United States. The announcement was made on Friday by U.S. Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec during an event at Victoria Palace of Government in Bucharest, CE Report quotes Agerpres
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas formalized Romania's inclusion in the program in Washington, emphasizing the culmination of years of collaboration between the two governments. Ambassador Kavalec highlighted the strong Romania-U.S. Strategic Partnership, built on shared democratic values, economic and cultural ties, and cooperation on security and defense.
"This milestone strengthens our relationship, boosting economic ties, encouraging investments, and deepening people-to-people connections," Kavalec stated. She explained that, once implemented, most Romanian travelers visiting the U.S. for business or tourism will no longer need to apply for a physical visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Instead, travel approvals will be processed online within three days, saving time and lowering costs for travelers and businesses.
The program also facilitates last-minute travel for holidays, events, and life celebrations, further enhancing the ties between the two nations. Kavalec expressed optimism about Romania's future in sports on the global stage, including potential participation in the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Ambassador Kavalec extended her gratitude to the media and colleagues at the U.S. Embassy for their role in achieving this milestone, underlining the importance of collective effort in realizing this shared success.
