Romania

The construction permit for the Poiana tunnel on the Sibiu-Pitesti Highway (A1) has been issued, with the Italian contractor already mobilized on-site. Preparatory work is underway for the access areas of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) installation, which will drill the tunnel's two galleries, announced Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu on Tuesday, CE Report quotes Agerpres

The Poiana tunnel, the longest on the highway, is part of Section 3 (Cornetu-Tigveni) of the project. It features two galleries, each with two lanes: one measuring 1,780 meters for the Sibiu-Pitesti direction and the other 1,778.11 meters for the reverse direction.

The contractor, a joint venture between Webuild (Astaldi) and Tancrad, is tasked with completing the 37.4 km Section 3 by November 2027. The Sibiu-Pitesti Highway, spanning 122.11 km, is part of the 4th Pan-European Corridor connecting Romania from Constanta Port to the Nadlac Border Crossing.
