Highlighting the strategic importance of the region, Tilvar emphasized Romania's ongoing commitment to keeping the Black Sea a priority on NATO’s agenda. The base in Deveselu hosts the U.S. Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System (AAMDS), a critical component of NATO’s defensive capabilities in Europe.
During the visit, Tilvar praised Commander-Captain Robert Foster on his recent appointment as head of the AAMDS system and reiterated the significance of the facility in NATO’s missile defense architecture. "Hosting this advanced technology underscores the strength of the Romanian-American strategic partnership and the U.S. commitment to bolstering defense in the Black Sea region," he remarked.
The minister also addressed the heightened security challenges stemming from Russia’s aggression, which has turned the Black Sea into a conflict zone. "Mines, drones, and debris from illegal attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure pose direct security threats to Romania," Tilvar noted, reaffirming the nation's dedication to countering these threats alongside its allies.
The visit included discussions with U.S. and Romanian military personnel, highlighting the base as a model of allied cooperation. Tilvar underlined the vital role of the U.S.-Romania Strategic Partnership in ensuring national and regional security.
