Romania Completes Modernization of Cheia Satellite Communications Centre
Romania’s Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digitization, Bogdan Ivan, announced the completion of modernization works at the satellite communications center in Cheia, the country’s first teleport, CE Report quotes Agerpres
"The operating funds for the Cheia center will continue to be provided by the Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digitization through the Romanian Space Agency," Ivan shared on Facebook.
With nearly 50 years of tradition, the Cheia center is the most advanced satellite communications hub in the region. It supports the transmission of TV programs to satellites for home reception via parabolic antennas and enables the detection of natural and artificial objects in orbit.
The newly upgraded system can identify artificial objects with remarkable precision. Objects as small as 20 square centimeters, like the size of an egg, can be detected at distances of 200–2,000 kilometers. Larger objects, such as a coffee table, can be tracked at orbital distances up to 36,000 kilometers.
This modernization enhances Romania's capabilities in space monitoring and communication infrastructure, positioning the Cheia center as a regional leader.
