EU Revokes Immunity of Former Polish Ministers
Former Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski and his ex-deputy Maciej Wasik had their parliamentary immunity revoked during a vote in the European Parliament on Tuesday in Strasbourg, CE Report quotes PAP
In July 2024, Polish Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar had requested the EP lift their immunity following their non-compliance with a court ruling that banned them from holding public office.
In December 2023, Kaminski and Wasik were sentenced to two years in prison for orchestrating an anti-corruption provocation in 2007, which was deemed an abuse of power during their leadership of Poland's Central Anti-Corruption Bureau. They were also banned from holding public office for five years. Despite this, they participated in parliamentary sessions shortly after the ruling.
The two were incarcerated on January 9, 2024, but were later pardoned by Polish President Andrzej Duda, which allowed them to run in the upcoming European Parliament elections. They are prominent members of the Law and Justice (PiS) party.
