EU Urges Stronger Defense Amid US Tariffs

Politics

The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, warned Thursday that there are "no winners in trade wars" following the US's announcement of 20% tariffs on European goods. She highlighted that such tariffs will lead to higher consumer prices, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Kallas emphasized the need for the EU to strengthen its own defense capabilities, noting the bloc's heavy reliance on American arms purchases. She called for diversification and increased support from other allies.

On the ongoing war in Ukraine, Kallas stressed the importance of speeding up military aid, as European countries are already supplying more than half of Ukraine’s ammunition. She also expects more short-term assistance for Ukraine to be announced at a defense ministers’ meeting in Poland.
