EU Unveils Strategy for the Future of Automotive Industry
The EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, presented the new EU Strategy for the Future of the European Automotive Industry at the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
Tzitzikostas emphasized the sector’s vital role in Europe’s economy, contributing 7% to GDP and employing 13.8 million people. However, he warned of key challenges, including supply chain disruptions, high energy costs, labor shortages, and reliance on imported raw materials.
The strategy introduces initiatives in five areas: innovation and digitization, clean mobility, supply chain resilience, skills development, and fair competition. To support these goals, significant funding will be allocated, including:
- €50 billion under InvestEU for clean technology and sustainable mobility
- €1.8 billion from the Innovation Fund for battery production
- €1 billion from Horizon Europe for autonomous vehicles and batteries
- €570 million for charging infrastructure, focusing on trucks
- €90 million from Erasmus+ for workforce training
The plan aims to ensure Europe's automotive sector remains competitive and sustainable in the face of global challenges.
