EU Grants Moldova €1.9 Billion for Development Amid Political Dispute

Politics

The European Union has approved a €1.9 billion financial support package for Moldova, aimed at modernizing infrastructure, building hospitals and schools, and creating jobs. This represents the largest EU aid package in Moldova’s history, including €520 million in grants and €1.5 billion in low-interest loans, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Speaker Igor Grosu defended the funding, stating that EU support is essential for Moldova’s progress, while criticizing the Socialist Party (PSRM) for opposing it. The Socialists argue that the aid increases Moldova’s debt burden and call for public debate on the issue.

Grosu dismissed PSRM’s claims, pointing out that previous governments sought loans from Russia instead. He emphasized that EU funds have already contributed to local development projects, unlike Russian aid.

The European assistance aims to strengthen Moldova’s resilience against hybrid threats and Russian interference, with an increased pre-financing mechanism to accelerate energy security and anti-corruption efforts.
