The construction of the Closed Controlled Facility in Vastria, northern Lesvos, is nearly finished and will be handed over in 2025, Migration and Asylum Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos announced, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
He confirmed that once Vastria becomes operational, the Mavrovouni facility will shut down, emphasizing that both centers will not function simultaneously. The new facility, now 95% complete, is a commitment Greece has made to the EU, which is funding the project.
During his visit to Lesvos, Panagiotopoulos met with local officials to discuss migration challenges and government initiatives. He highlighted that the new center will support tourism and economic growth by relocating migrants away from key areas. He also noted significant progress in decongesting Mavrovouni, with the migrant population there decreasing from 3,903 to 2,929 in the past month.
