Greek Parliament to Hold Second Vote for New President

Politics

The Greek Parliament will conduct its second roll-call vote on Friday to elect a new president of the Hellenic Republic. Candidates must secure a two-thirds majority (200 MPs) to win, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

In the first round on January 25, former Parliament President Constantinos Tasoulas, nominated by New Democracy, led with 160 votes. Louka Katseli (SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance) followed with 40 votes, while Tasos Giannitsis (PASOK-Movement for Change) received 34. The 'Niki' party’s nominee garnered 14 votes, with 49 MPs abstaining and three absent.

If no candidate reaches the required threshold, a third vote will take place in five days, needing 180 votes. Failing that, a fourth round will require 151 votes, and a final round—if necessary—will elect the candidate with the most votes.

Stay tuned for updates on the presidential election.
