Representing Greece at the memorial event in Poland, he emphasized, "Racism, intolerance, and anti-Semitism have no place in modern societies. Historical memory is our best weapon against violence. We remember and will always remember what happened here in Auschwitz. Never again." CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
The ceremony commemorated January 27, 1945, when Soviet forces liberated the Nazi concentration camp, where six million Jews, including 67,000 Greek Jews, perished. "With awe and respect, I stand here in Auschwitz for this significant anniversary," Hatzivasileiou remarked, noting the dwindling number of Holocaust survivors over the years.
Representatives from 53 countries, alongside officials from the European Union, United Nations, UNESCO, and NATO, attended the solemn event. Survivors of the Holocaust shared their powerful testimonies, ensuring the atrocities of the past are never forgotten.
