Trump Signals Potential for New Iran Nuclear Deal, Stresses Strict Verification
Former US President Donald Trump has suggested that a new nuclear agreement with Iran is possible, but emphasized the need for strict terms. Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump stated, "The only thing I've said about Iran is they can't have a nuclear weapon. They are religious zealots, but I want them to have a great country because they have great potential, and the people are amazing." CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
Trump stressed that any deal with Iran must involve rigorous verification measures, saying, "It would have to verify times 10. If they get a nuclear weapon, it’s going to trigger a disaster."
Reports indicate Trump may appoint his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to spearhead diplomatic efforts with Tehran. Witkoff has played a key role in recent Middle East negotiations, including facilitating a ceasefire in Gaza and securing the release of Israeli hostages after Hamas's October 2023 attack.
This marks a potential shift from Trump's earlier "maximum pressure" campaign, which included the 2018 withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The original accord had lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program.
While no official announcement has been made, Trump acknowledged Witkoff as a strong candidate for the role, stating, "He’s certainly somebody I would use."
