Parliament to Elect New President Following Tassoulas’ Resignation

The plenary session of the parliament will vote on Wednesday to elect a new president, following the resignation of Constantinos Tassoulas. Tassoulas, nominated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the office of President of the Republic, has stepped down to allow the process to proceed, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

Nikitas Kaklamanis is widely expected to win with overwhelming support, as opposition parties PASOK-Movement for Change and SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance have endorsed his candidacy. Parliamentary groups such as Elliniki Lysi and Spartiates, along with most independent MPs, are also leaning in favor of his election. However, the New Left plans to abstain with a 'present' vote, a position likely to be mirrored by the Communist Party of Greece, Niki, and Plefsi Eleftherias.

A handover ceremony will follow the election of the new president.
