Maia Sandu: No Obstacles from Chisinau for Gas Supply to Transnistria

Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that there are no obstacles from Chisinau preventing Russian gas from reaching Transnistria, suggesting the supply halt may stem from Moscow's decisions. Sandu shared these remarks during an interview on TVR Moldova, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Highlighting Moldova's energy challenges, Sandu recalled past instances when energy was used as a tool of blackmail. She praised recent efforts to reduce energy dependence on Russian resources, particularly on the right bank of the Dniester River. However, she criticized past governments for failing to connect the right bank directly to Romania and the European energy market, noting that vulnerabilities remain as electricity from Romania still passes through the left bank before reaching the right bank.

The left bank of the Dniester, heavily reliant on Russian gas, faces even greater vulnerabilities, which Sandu said have contributed to a humanitarian crisis. She emphasized that recent reforms over the past few years helped prevent similar hardships on the right bank.

Since January 1, 2025, the right bank has not received electricity from the Kuchurgan power station, following Gazprom's suspension of gas supplies to Moldovagaz. Moldova now relies on domestic production and imports to meet its energy needs.
