Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced New Democracy's proposal for the next President of the Hellenic Republic in a televised address on Wednesday. The nominee is Constantine Tassoulas, the current Parliament President and one of the country’s highest-ranking officials, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

“Tassoulas’ broad acceptance stems from his repeated election as Parliament President with historic majorities—283, 270, and 249 votes. His unifying spirit and exceptional leadership have been evident in his impartial handling of parliamentary affairs during challenging times,” Mitsotakis stated.

The prime minister also emphasized the importance of a single six-year term for the President of the Republic, proposing constitutional changes to ensure the role remains above party politics. This, he argued, would prevent recurring controversies over term renewals and preserve the institution's integrity.

Mitsotakis expressed gratitude to outgoing President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, praising her for elevating national dignity and setting a humane example of leadership. He urged parliamentary parties to assess Tassoulas' candidacy based on his experience, knowledge, and character, calling his election a “choice of unity and progress for Greece.”
