Chania Police Department to Be Overhauled Following Fatal Traffic Accident
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has ordered the overhaul of the Chania Police Department after a tragic traffic accident in Souda last Saturday claimed the life of a 22-year-old man, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
The incident involved a collision between the victim's car and a vehicle driven by a 45-year-old man who had previously failed a breathalyzer test but was not detained. The driver had claimed he was without his license, which was later revealed to have been revoked for a prior drunk-driving offense.
Instead of taking the driver into custody, police handed the car keys to a passenger who tested negative for alcohol. The driver later retrieved the vehicle and caused the fatal crash.
Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis criticized the police's handling of the case, stating that the law was not enforced and promising appropriate sanctions against those involved.
Sources indicate that a police officer from Athens will be appointed to lead the General Police Directorate of Chania as part of the reforms.
