Government Spokesperson Comments on Key Issues: Trademark Victory, Greek-Turkish Relations, and Economic Challenges
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis addressed several pressing topics during an appearance on Open TV on Saturday. Among the highlights was the recent decision by the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to cancel the registration of the "Turkaegean" trademark. Marinakis described the ruling as a significant victory for Greece, emphasizing its potential to set a legal precedent in future cases. He credited the swift action of the Greek government, noting that the issue originated under former minister Adonis Georgiadis and concluded with Takis Theodorikakos at the helm of the development ministry. Marinakis also addressed Greek-Turkish relations, reiterating that Greece recognizes only one dispute with Turkiye: the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Aegean. He stated that resolving this issue through arbitration in line with international law remains Greece’s consistent position. While affirming the importance of dialogue, he stressed that Greece will not negotiate its "red lines" and will continue to safeguard its positions, particularly in areas such as immigration management and territorial sovereignty. Marinakis also dismissed Turkish arguments regarding western Thrace and its Muslim minority as unfounded and contrary to international law.
On domestic issues, Marinakis was asked about the upcoming announcement of the government’s candidate for the Greek presidency, expected after January 15. He emphasized that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis would explain his decision and address any questions at that time, dismissing current speculation.
Marinakis also highlighted government measures to address rising costs, including increases in insurance premiums and electricity prices, aimed at protecting the public during challenging economic times.
In closing, he underscored the government’s commitment to defending national interests while fostering constructive dialogue and supporting citizens amidst economic pressures.
