Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced a historic milestone on Friday: starting at the end of March 2025, Romanians will be able to travel to the United States without a visa. Ciolacu described the achievement as "a historic moment we have been waiting for over 16 years." CE Report quotes Agerpres

Speaking at an event marking Romania’s designation as a Visa Waiver Program country, Ciolacu noted this development reflects Romania’s growing recognition on the international stage. It comes shortly after Romania's full admission to the Schengen area, further cementing the nation’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

“This decision symbolizes U.S. confidence in Romania, its institutions, and its citizens,” Ciolacu said. “It also acknowledges the progress Romania has made in recent years, including key reforms and alignment with international standards.”

Ciolacu praised the collective efforts behind the achievement, including millions of Romanians at home and abroad who renewed their visas to help reduce refusal rates. Special thanks were given to Gheorghe Hagi, the legendary Romanian footballer, for supporting the campaign.

“Today, we celebrate the success of our entire society. This is a turning point, proving that with a clear plan, determination, and reliable partners, success is within reach,” Ciolacu concluded.

This announcement marks a significant step forward in Romania’s partnership with the United States, fostering closer ties and greater opportunities for its citizens.
