Slovenia condemns Trump’s border threats
Slovenia does not condone changing internationally recognised borders by force, Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon told the STA after Thursday's government session, responding to the threats made by US president-elect Donald Trump about using force to seize the Panama Canal and Greenland. CE Report quotes STA.
"Slovenia does not condone changing the internationally recognised borders, not with weapons and not with force," Fajon said.
Trump's statements point to his rather aggressive stance on foreign affairs and have caused headaches and concern in a time where the international law, rule of law and the UN Charter are not being respected, the minister said.
The first responses to Trump's statements from both Denmark and Greenland show that Greenland wants to tread its own path, Fajon said.
This was not the first expression of a territorial ambition from the US for Greenland because of its natural resources, Fajon said, adding that Greenland is both EU and NATO territory.
"If there were violent annexation tendencies, that would be extremely concerning," the minister said.
She said the world is becoming scarily unpredictable and that small states are facing big challenges. It will be very important for Slovenia that it strengthens the institutions it is part of and advocates for international law, the UN Charter and the effectiveness of multilateralism, Fajon said.
