Chisinau Assures Energy Resources for Left Bank Localities Amid Infrastructure Challenges
Chisinau has pledged to provide energy resources to 14 localities on the left bank of the Dniester River until they are connected to networks managed by Moldova's constitutional authorities. President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, and Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian gave the assurances during a visit to Varnița, Dubăsari, on January 9, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
During discussions with local mayors, officials addressed the energy situation and outlined solutions, including supplying public institutions with generators, wood, and pellets. President Sandu emphasized the importance of long-term solutions, such as biomass power plants, with project preparation underway by the Ministry of Infrastructure and municipalities.
Prime Minister Recean noted that while plans for interconnection with electricity and natural gas networks are progressing, some works, such as under-river crossings, will face significant challenges and delays. Deputy Prime Minister Serebrian highlighted the need for investments and potential collaboration with Tiraspol for temporary access to infrastructure under their administration.
Sandu also announced ongoing discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on coal supplies for power generation. Meanwhile, Chisinau continues to provide immediate aid to the affected localities, including generators and medicines.
The energy crisis follows Gazprom’s decision to halt gas deliveries to Moldova as of January 1, 2025, citing a disputed debt invalidated by an international audit. Chisinau has accused Moscow of energy blackmail, with Russian gas previously powering Transnistrian infrastructure, including the Cuciurgan power plant.
This effort underscores Chisinau’s commitment to supporting citizens on the left bank while pursuing sustainable energy solutions and reinforcing energy independence.
