Gazprom Halts Gas Supply to Moldova, Nordic Baltic States Pledge Support
Gazprom’s decision to stop supplying gas to Moldova from 1 January 2025 aims to destabilize the country politically and economically, according to a joint statement by the Nordic Baltic countries on Moldova’s energy situation, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
The declaration commends Moldova’s efforts to secure alternative gas and electricity supplies under challenging circumstances.
“We will collaborate with the European Commission and other key partners to enhance international assistance for Moldova. Recent infrastructure improvements and increased transport capacity have bolstered Moldova’s resilience to external energy pressures, demonstrating its commitment to strengthening energy security,” the statement emphasizes.
The Nordic Baltic states reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Moldova in overcoming current energy challenges and advancing energy sector reforms.
“These efforts are crucial not only for Moldova’s sustainable development but also for regional stability, especially given Europe’s broader energy security goals and the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine,” the declaration notes.
Gazprom’s suspension of gas deliveries has placed Moldova in a state of emergency since 16 December 2024, amid concerns about a potential humanitarian crisis in the Transnistrian region due to Russia’s failure to fulfill contractual obligations.
