Erdogan Calls Syrian Revolution a 'Historic Opportunity' for Türkiye and the Region

Politics

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the Syrian revolution as a “historic opportunity” for Türkiye and the region, reaffirming his commitment to creating a terror-free Türkiye. Speaking at the Administrators’ Day event in Ankara, Erdogan emphasized the significance of recent developments in Syria, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

“With the Syrian revolution, a historic window of opportunity has opened both for our country and our region. We will realize our ideal of a terror-free Türkiye,” Erdogan said.

He also highlighted the devastating impact of Syria's 13-year conflict, estimating losses exceeding $500 billion. “Our teams visiting Syria report the situation is much worse,” he added.

Addressing criticisms about Syrian refugees in Türkiye, Erdogan defended their presence, stating they contribute to the country’s economic, social, and cultural enrichment. Türkiye currently hosts over 3 million Syrian refugees.

The remarks come after a significant shift in Syria's political landscape. President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia following the fall of Damascus on Dec. 8, marking the end of his nearly 25-year rule. Anti-regime fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham captured key cities in a swift offensive lasting less than two weeks. A new administration, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, has since taken control.
