Ed Davey Calls for US Ambassador to Address Elon Musk's UK Comments
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has urged the UK government to summon the US ambassador for an explanation following controversial remarks by Elon Musk, who is set to assume a role in the incoming US administration, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
Musk recently suggested on his social media platform, X, that the UK government should be overthrown, sparking outrage. Davey accused Musk of undermining UK democracy, stating, “People have had enough of Elon Musk interfering with our country’s democracy when he clearly knows nothing about Britain.”
The controversy follows months of tension between Musk and UK officials. Last summer, Musk claimed a “civil war is inevitable” in the UK, comments that coincided with far-right riots fueled by misinformation spread online.
On Monday, Musk conducted a poll on X asking users if the US should “liberate the people of Britain from their tyrannical government.” Over 750,000 users participated, with 61% voting “Yes.”
Davey described Musk’s rhetoric as “dangerous and irresponsible” and called for stronger European alliances, saying, “It’s in our national interest to rebuild trade and security ties with our allies in Europe.”
Musk has also targeted UK leaders, accusing Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips of being a “rape genocide apologist” and calling for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s imprisonment over alleged mishandling of child abuse cases.
Prime Minister Starmer indirectly addressed the situation, condemning the spread of misinformation and “far-right rhetoric” during a press conference.
