Former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis passed away at 88 in Agioi Theodoroi, Corinth. He was rushed to Corinth Hospital early Sunday morning but was pronounced dead at 8:10 am following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

Born in Piraeus on June 23, 1936, Simitis studied law and economics in Germany and England, where he met his wife, Daphne. The couple had two daughters.

Simitis served as Prime Minister from 1996 to 2004, succeeding Andreas Papandreou and leading the PASOK party. His tenure is remembered for modernizing Greek society, stabilizing the economy, and securing Greece's accession to the Economic and Monetary Union.

Simitis' leadership left a lasting impact on Greece's role in Europe and the global arena.
