Greek PM Highlights Key Role in Middle East Stability and EU Defence at Brussels Summit
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized Greece's critical role in protecting the Greek Orthodox community in Syria and Lebanon and stressed the importance of safeguarding Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mitsotakis reiterated Athens' request for increased European funding for common defence, underlining Greece’s leadership in advancing the EU’s defence policies. He highlighted the urgency of addressing global challenges, including the war in Ukraine, Middle East tensions, and relations with the Global South.
"The EU must strengthen its defence capabilities to independently address threats," Mitsotakis stated, adding that Greece’s advocacy for greater European defence resources is gaining support across the bloc.
The prime minister also briefed EU leaders on his recent visit to Lebanon, voicing concerns over the protection of religious minorities, particularly the Greek Orthodox community under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Antioch. He stressed the need for an inclusive government in Syria to safeguard the rights of all communities.
Mitsotakis affirmed Greece's commitment to shaping a unified European approach to Middle East stability and broader geopolitical challenges.
