Greece Upgrades Emergency Number 112 with Next-Generation Technology
The Greek Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, signed a €17.5 million contract on Wednesday to upgrade the 112 emergency number under the AIGIS program, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian
The new system introduces cutting-edge features such as precise geolocation, video calls, a silent emergency button, and enhanced accessibility for people with disabilities. Kikilias highlighted the importance of 112 in civil protection, emphasizing that the upgrade will integrate cloud-based technologies and improve coordination between agencies like the Fire Brigade, Police, Coast Guard, and Armed Forces.
The upgraded system will also enhance citizen interactivity and emergency response planning by leveraging both closed and open data sources. “This marks a new era for 112, making it a more powerful tool to protect and assist citizens,” Kikilias stated.
