Independent Candidate Challenges Decision to Resume Romanian Presidential Election
Independent candidate Calin Georgescu has filed a case with Romania's High Court of Cassation and Justice, contesting the Central Electoral Bureau's (BEC) decision to restart the presidential election. This move follows the Constitutional Court's annulment of the first-round results, CE Report quotes Agerpres
Georgescu, alongside the Coalition for the Defence of the Rule of Law, has named multiple institutions and individuals in the case, including the BEC, the Ministry of Defence, the General Staff, the Government, the Prosecutor’s Office, the Constitutional Court, the Romanian Intelligence Service, President Klaus Iohannis, and Elena Lasconi, the other candidate advancing from the first round.
The lawsuit seeks to overturn BEC decisions (no. 230D/2024, 231D/2024, and 232D/2024) that canceled the initial electoral process and mandated a complete restart, in line with the Constitutional Court's ruling.
