Romania to Annul Presidential Elections Following Evidence of Russian Interference

Politics

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Friday that the annulment of the presidential elections, as decided by the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR), is the only appropriate response after newly declassified documents revealed evidence of Russian interference that significantly distorted the election results, CE Report quotes Agerpres

“The CCR's decision to annul the presidential elections is the only correct solution following the declassification of documents from the CSAT meeting. These documents demonstrate that the vote of the Romanian people was flagrantly distorted by Russia’s intervention. The elections must be held again,” Ciolacu stated on Facebook.

He emphasized the need for thorough investigations to identify those responsible for attempting to manipulate the election outcome. Ciolacu called for transparency, urging authorities to provide clear answers backed by solid evidence to restore public trust in state institutions and democratic processes.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of validating the new Parliament’s mandates and establishing a pro-European majority to facilitate the rapid appointment of a government committed to Romania’s European development path. He stressed the urgency of countering extremist forces and reaffirmed the agreement between major parties to prioritize national stability over individual political interests.

Ciolacu added that forming a new government would send a positive signal to the economic sector and foreign investors, particularly amid recent instability. He noted that the new government’s focus would include safeguarding citizens' incomes and preparing a 2025 budget to ensure continued investment in European-funded projects.
