Romanian Jewish Federation Pledges to Defend Democracy Amid Rising Extremism

The Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania (FCER) remains steadfast in its commitment to defending democracy and freedom while promoting the values that define Romanian society. FCER President and MP Silviu Vexler made this clear in a statement on Thursday, emphasizing the organization's determination to prevent any return to dictatorship in Romania, CE Report quotes Agerpres

“Democracy, freedom, and belief in God are fundamental values that must remain at the core of any society,” Vexler said, reflecting on the importance of the upcoming presidential election. He recalled the Jewish community’s historical contributions to Romania, including their sacrifices during the War of Independence and World War I, despite not being recognized as citizens at the time.

Quoting the Jewish principle, “Seek the prosperity of the city to which I have sent you as exiles. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for if it prospers, you too will prosper,” Vexler highlighted the unwavering loyalty of the Jewish community to Romania throughout history.

However, he expressed concern over the current state of democracy, warning that the values underpinning Romanian society are at risk. Vexler criticized politicians promoting anti-Semitism, attempting to glorify war criminals, and seeking to revive the Legionary movement’s extremist ideology. This movement, characterized by violence and ethnic persecution, poses a threat to the principles of freedom and justice, he argued.

While acknowledging that democracy is imperfect and fraught with challenges, Vexler underscored that a return to dictatorship is unthinkable. He reiterated the importance of Romania’s Euro-Atlantic path, NATO membership, and European Union integration as critical to the nation’s development and well-being.

Reflecting on his family’s suffering under past regimes, including persecution by the Iron Guard and the dictatorship of Ion Antonescu, Vexler stressed the importance of resisting extremism. He declared his support for Elena Lasconi in the presidential election, framing the vote as a choice between light and darkness, progress and regression.

“This vote is no longer about individuals or political parties. It is a fight against isolationism, extremism, and populism. On Sunday, we have the chance to safeguard our future or risk losing everything,” Vexler concluded.

The FCER has vowed to continue advocating for democracy, freedom, and the enduring values that define a prosperous and inclusive society.
