Change in the language law threatens stability of North Macedonia
The Constitutional Court of North Macedonia has decided to review the constitutionality of the Language Use Law on December 11 – one of the key pillars of the Ohrid Peace Agreement and interethnic coexistence.
This was announced by the Democratic Union for Integration, stating that any attempt to abolish any provision of this law is not just a legal action, but a direct blow to the stability and peace that the country has built through great sacrifices, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
"Moreover, the Albanian ethnic judges of the Constitutional Court have publicly declared that they will boycott this session and decision-making, making an unilateral decision to annul provisions of the Language Use Law even more dangerous. This boycott is a strong indicator that these efforts to attack 10 articles of this law are deeply discriminatory and aim to 'kill' the Albanian language institutionally. This law is the product of a complex compromise, achieved after years of difficult negotiations, and is the foundation of interethnic equality and mutual respect. A decision that would violate this law would represent a serious breach of the Ohrid Agreement and a regression to an uncertain and turbulent future," the statement reads.
The Democratic Union for Integration considers this moment a critical point, where any action aiming to disrupt this delicate balance is crossing the Rubicon.
"Once this line is crossed, there will be no turning back. If the Constitutional Court decides to destroy the achievements of the Ohrid Agreement, the consequences will be irreparable, and we cannot be held responsible for what may follow. We call on citizens, political leaders, and the international community to act immediately to prevent this act that threatens the stability of the country and the region. Albanians and all communities that believe in justice and equality cannot remain silent in the face of this threat. This is not a moment to be indifferent. This is a moment to choose the right side of history. We will do everything to protect peace and stability, but the responsibility for the consequences will fall on those who have chosen to challenge this peace and risk the future of the country," the statement concludes.
