Elected in 2013, Pope Francis was known for his humility, progressive reforms, and dedication to compassion and justice. As the first Jesuit and non-European pope in over a millennium, he led with a focus on unity, environmental stewardship, and healing past wounds, including public apologies to survivors of clerical abuse.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he became a global moral voice, notably through his 2015 encyclical Laudato si, urging action on climate change.

The head of state will pay tribute on behalf of all citizens, honoring the legacy of a pope who sought to bring people and nations closer together.
