Electricity Consumption Fully Covered in Moldova Amid Energy Challenges
The Government of Moldova has confirmed that electricity consumption for December 30 and 31, 2024, was fully covered without activating breakdown contracts or unintentional flows, according to the Crisis Cell's reports, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
On December 31, energy sources included MGRES/Cuciurgan power plant (31%), Termoelectrica (25.95%), CET-Nord SA (4.29%), NHE Costești (0.76%), renewable energy (6.85%), and imports from Romania and Ukraine (31.1%). Energocom stated that consumption will also be fully covered on January 1, 2025. MGRES supplied over 50% of electricity needs for the right bank by year-end. Despite the cessation of Russian gas deliveries, the 600 MW deficit is being addressed through contracts with regional suppliers and Romanian electricity exchanges.
In the natural gas sector, no incidents have been reported. Daily consumption at CET-Nord is 260,000 cubic meters, and Termoelectrica uses 1.88 million cubic meters. Both plants operate as scheduled.
However, the Transnistrian region faces significant disruptions. On January 1, 2025, local utilities halted natural gas, heating, and hot water supplies to several areas, primarily affecting private sector buildings with alternative heating. Earlier, on December 28, Tiraspoltransgaz disconnected public institutions, schools, hospitals, and other facilities from the gas network, including penitentiaries and government offices in Bender.
Chisinau authorities are working to connect affected institutions to alternative energy sources. The state of emergency declared on December 16, 2024, continues as Moldova navigates the impact of Gazprom's suspension of natural gas deliveries on January 1, 2025.
