Foreign Interference in Moldova's Electoral Processes: SIS Director's Report

Moldova

The Director of Moldova's Intelligence and Security Service (SIS), Alexandru Musteata, presented a report in parliament today, revealing the extent of foreign interference in the country's electoral processes. Musteata emphasized that Moldova has been subjected to hybrid influence campaigns, with Russia investing hundreds of millions of dollars in efforts to corrupt voters and change the political elite, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

He noted that these attacks on Moldova's sovereignty began in 2022, with foreign efforts intensifying in 2023, particularly concerning the country's upcoming elections: local, presidential, and parliamentary. Musteata warned that Moldova faces ongoing interference, including organized crime rings, foreign-funded platforms, and agents working against the country's interests.

The SIS director also highlighted that the primary goal for foreign actors in 2024 is to disrupt the presidential election and constitutional referendum, with a crime ring led by Ilan Shor playing a central role. This group has received logistical, financial, and technical support, with an operational coordination center in Moscow under Russian protection. Additionally, Moldova's Prosecutor General and National Anticorruption Centre also presented reports on electoral corruption.
